Contest Rules and Information
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded for the following categories:
1. Sweet Kugel*
2. Savory Kugel*
A Critic’s Choice and People’s Choice prize will be awarded for each category, based on a cumulative score.

Booths
Each booth will be located in the Beth Shalom Social Hall and will be numbered. You may decorate your space if you choose. Please be considerate of the teams around you and keep your supplies and decorations within your allotted space.
Trash
You are responsible for removing your trash from the booth. You will be supplied with a trash receptacle and garbage bags. Please do not leave any trash at your booth.
Food
A light bagel breakfast will be provided to spectators as part of their admission fee. All Kugel Chefs will be allowed to partake of this light meal.
Contest Logistics
Preparation Prior to the Event
Contestants will be allowed to begin preparing any special ingredients prior to the event, but by appointment only. Please do not bring any pots, pans, containers or utensils into the kosher Beth Shalom kitchen. Any food items brought in must be sealed and with a proper kosher marking. The Kugel Cook-off committee will pre-boil your noodles prior to the start of the event. To make arrangements for pre-cooking, contact Lisa Driban at [email protected].
Ingredient and Cooking Utensils
The ingredients ordered and cooking utensils will be placed at your booth prior to the start of the event. Due to kosher rules, you cannot use your own utensils. You may arrange to use the utensils in the Beth Shalom kitchen, but you may not remove any items from the kitchens without permission from the committee. All utensils, pots and remaining ingredients are the property of the event committee and may not be removed from the social hall.
Ingredients Table
Please help yourself to any items that are on the community table during the cook-off. Please do not remove any ingredients from another team’s box. There will be ample ingredients.
Clean up
It is very important that each team help clean up the synagogue kitchen. We must leave the kitchen and work stations in the Social hall clean.
Assistance
Kugel Cook-off Committee Members will be well marked and available for assistance throughout the event. Please introduce yourself and use them as a resource. Have fun, be creative and good luck!
Kosher Rules
All food products used for this event must have approved kosher symbols.
Kosher Utensils
To obey kosher rules you must use the utensils provided by Congregation Beth Shalom. Please do not bring any utensils or cooking supplies from home, even if your home is kosher. Use of outside utensils and food items may result in disqualification from the contest.
Snacks
Please do not bring any snacks or food into the social hall, a light brunch is being served.
Judging Procedures
Contestant Numbering System
Numbered plates will be given to each chef upon arrival on Sunday morning.
Critic’s Choice Judging Criteria (1‐10)
100% Outstanding
60% Average
40% So‐so
20% Poor ‐ unappetizing/inedible
0% DQ – failure to follow the rules, hair in the food
The following items are not allowed on the plates: garnish, aluminum foil, toothpicks, skewers or other foreign materials.
Each sample will be judged on the following items:

- Appearance 20%
- Taste 50%
- Creativity 30%
Food Sample Requirements
- Presentation containers – all food must be delivered on the labeled plates
- Teams must supply enough product for each of the three judges, (at least a finger size is a sample)
- Gloves must be worn to keep hands off the food samples
- Kugels must be fully cooked. Any uncooked eggs will result in disqualification.
- Must use the utensils and/or gloves provided to you. Teams will be disqualified if they use their hands without gloves to plate the food on the plates provided.
People’s Choice Judging Criteria
- The remaining kugel will be cut into bite sized pieces and placed in the small cups provided for the spectators to taste. A committee member will be available to assist with cutting and serving the samples.
- Each spectator will be given two tickets to drop into a bag at their favorite savory and sweet kugel’s booth.
- The kugels with the most tickets will win the People’s Choice Award.
Team Registration
Kugel Cook-off Team Registration
All Cook-off Teams must complete the Registration Form. A copy of your recipe must accompany your registration. A cookbook will be compiled including all of the recipes from the contest.
Once completed, please submit the Team Registration Form, Kosher Ingredient Order Form and your recipe electronically on this website. Mail your entry fee of $54.00 to the following address:
